Child Riders Scheme By MetLife

"Metropolitan Life Insurance Company has, for many years, offered a Child Rider as an additional option on its life insurance policies. Under the Child Rider, an additional premium is charged each year for insurance coverage of a policyholder's children until such children reach age 25. However, while the insurance coverage stops when the children reach age 25, Metropolitan Life has not stopped billing for the extra premium for the child rider, unless policy holders are alert enough to complain. Metropolitan Life has not reminded policy holders when the insurance coverage of their children has stopped. A parent whose children reach the age of 25 when she is 50 can be charged premiums for 15 years on a Child Rider that provides no coverage at all. The suit contends that charging policy holders the additional premium for child coverage after the additional coverage stops (when the child reaches age 25) is a deceptive practice, in violation of New York State law. The suit is attempting to obtain compensation to victims of this deceptive practice, not only for the named plaintiff, but also for the class of policyholders affected by this practice. If the court approves class action status, affected policy holders will be notified and asked whether they wish to participate in the suit."
